AMV stands for Anime Music Video. It is basically a combination of anime clips and music playing in a synchronized rhythm. It could also include images, fanarts, or even pictures from Manga set to a popular song.
An AMV is an acronym
for "Anime Music Video" It is when an anime fan, takes clips of their
favorite anime and mash them together cleverly, putting it to music. A
good AMV consists of nice timing, a good, fitting song, clear, vivid
clips, and an author/creators note on what song was used if the viewers
so wish to look up the song if they like it.
AMVs started to gain popularity during the late 90s when Jim Kaposztas created the first AMV ever by editing scenes from the anime Star Blazers an American animated television series adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato which was quite popular at that time. Jim
created an ironic and funny effect on high-action. It is still one of
the most popular AMV's out there, in addition to being one of the
earliest. although his edits are nothing like they are today.
AMVs making techniques have long improved since back then offering more styles, visual effects, and better quality music. AMV's are as popular as ever today with new edits being created and uploaded every day on YouTube. There are even websites dedicated to hosting, aggregating AMV's, and providing easy access to resources used in the majority of AMV editing. AnimeStock being one of them.
There also exist
popular AMV contests held at anime cons, animestock, and generally all
over the Internet to see who can create the best AMV. Even after two
decades of existence, Otaku and non-otaku enjoy AMV's alike.
the process of making AMVs, one can express creativity, skills, or at
the very least dedicate their love to their favorite anime character
through video. It's also a good waste of time for some people.
A lot of fans put a great amount of time into making and editing AMVs while for others, it's just a hobby. The majority of anime fans use AMVs to express various emotions such as sadness, happiness, anxiousness, grief, and many others. it takes practice, skill, and patience to make a good AMV.
A very well put together AMV can serve as a form of enjoyment or evoke tears of happiness especially for those who familiarize with the series and have seen shat both the main characters have gone through.
AMV is known in wasei-eigo as MAD, music anime
douga. In general, most animated music videos are limited to Japanese
animations and Japanese video games. AMVs are not official music videos
released by the musicians but fans, so most of them are directly posted
online through YouTube.
Youtube has so far been the best video resource to find and upload AMVs although it
does not have a very solid footing due to copyright issues on both the
video clips and audio tracks. Unfortunately, anime companies, popular
music labels, and corporations generally see AMVs in a negative light.
Some even go so far as to term it illegal.
